Sun in the 6th House in Vedic Astrology: Meaning

In short

Sun in the 6th house in Vedic astrology: Natural superiority in competition and service; disciplined work. The 6th house is the area of health, daily order, service, rivals and your power to overcome difficulty; Sun brings its themes of self, authority, vitality, soul, father here.

What does the 6th house describe? Shatru/Roga/Ari Bhava (House of Service and Purification)

Karaka: Mars (in some schools, Saturn) · Class: Dusthana + Upachaya

This is the house of enemies, health challenges, debts, daily routine, and service. Because it is also an Upachaya house, the capacity to overcome obstacles also grows stronger here.

• If strong: Superiority in competition, disciplined work habits, the ability to turn challenges into opportunities.
• If challenged: This house is traditionally considered a "purification zone" — a regular routine, setting boundaries, and service-oriented behavior (e.g., volunteering) direct this house's energy positively. Always consult a physician for concrete health concerns.

Type of the 6th house

Dusthana houses (6, 8, 12) deal with difficulty, transformation and letting go; a planet here gives its results through effort or delay. Upachaya houses (3, 6, 10, 11) are houses that grow over time; the results of a planet here increase over the years.

How does Sun work in this house?

Sun is a natural malefic planet. Planets counted as malefic do well in upachaya houses (3, 6, 10, 11), where they grow stronger over time and give good results. Here Sun is in a classically good place: it gives fighting strength and endurance.

Sun in the 6th house: when does it strengthen, when is it strained?

Strengthens: a growing house: the power to overcome rivals and debts; with Mars's or Jupiter's aspect, when the 6th lord is in an angle. Strained: an exalted Sun can carry the heaviest responsibility here (commentator's note); 12th-house matters, rest above all, can be neglected.

Mature face: effort that spots the problem and shines through service. Raw face: neglecting rest, taking every task on oneself.

Two views: Classical view (BPHS, Phaladipika): a malefic gives good results in the 6th and overcomes rivals · other view (modern commentators): the 6th is also a house of difficulty, so a strong Sun can make responsibility heavier here. Both meet in 'superiority earned by effort'.

Where does Sun look from the 6th house?

In Vedic astrology a planet casts its gaze (drishti) on certain houses from where it stands and influences those areas too. In this placement:

• 12th house (the inner realm, rest, spirituality, distant places and withdrawal)

In which sign?

The same house placement gives results more easily when Sun is in a sign where it is strong, and with more effort when it is in a sign where it struggles.
